Endolysins are hydrolytic enzymes produced by bacteriophages to break down the cell wall. They have been proposed as possible antibiotics due to their potent specificity, low incidence of resistance, and natural origins for environmental and clinical safety. In this paper, Chang et al. take a look at an endolysin targeting Staphylococcus aureus. The endolysin LysSA97 was not only able to lyse cells, but also remove biofilm. It was effective at variable levels of pH, temperature and NaCl concentrations for promising biocontrol in a variety of environments.
