Gorityala et al. took an interesting look at overcoming antibiotic resistance by linking two common antibiotics together. Their hybrid antibiotic of aminoglycoside moxifloxacin, connected by a C12 tether, was designed to combat multi-drug resistant gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The hybrid showed a low incidence of resistance mutations as expected from multitargetting antibiotics. It was also potent against multiple levels of drug-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa, MDR, XDR and PDR, and showed evidence of destabilization and depolarization the cell membranes.
