Description
Sulfamethoxazole is a broad spectrum bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfamethoxazole is insoluble in water and freely soluble in acetone.

    CAS Number

    723-46-6

    Molecular Formula

    C10H11N3O3S

    Molecular Weight

    253.28

    Mechanism of Action

Similar to other sulfonamides, sulfamethoxazole acts as a competitor with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in the folic acid synthesis pathway. Folic acid metabolites are used during DNA synthesis and as a result of inhibiting this pathway, bacterial growth is drastically inhibited.

    Storage Conditions

    2-8°C

    2935.00.4800

Applications

    Microbiology Applications

Sulfamethoxazole can be added to Muller Hinton II agar for antibiotic susceptibility testing protocols.
