Description

Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic similar to aminoglycosides.

TOKU-E offers two forms of spectinomycin: spectinomycin DiHCl (S006) and spectinomycin sulfate (S016). In aqueous solution, spectinomycin DiHCl is freely soluble, and spectinomycin sulfate is sparingly soluble (0.150 mg/mL).

    CAS Number

    64058-48-6

    Molecular Formula

    C14H26N2O11S•H2SO4•4H2O

    Molecular Weight

    502.49

    Mechanism of Action

Aminocyclitols target the 30S ribosomal subunit resulting in an inability to read mRNA ultimately producing a faulty or nonexistent protein.

    Storage Conditions

    2-8°C

    Tariff Code

    2941.90.5000

    Spectrum

Spectinomycin primarily targets gram negative bacteria, especially those which cause gonorrhea.

Applications

    Microbiology Applications

Spectinomycin sulfate is commonly as a selective agent to isolate cells that contain aadA spectinomycin resistance genes. Spectinomycin sulfate is typically used at concentrations between 50 - 100 µg/mL.
