Monensin is an ionophore, commonly used as a coccidiostat and growth promoting agent in animal feeds. It is favored also for its antibiotic activity against gram-negative pathogenic bacteria and antiparsitic activity which prevents dysentery.

Monensin sodium salt is soluble in chloroform, methanol, and other organic solvents and only slightly soluble in water.

    Mechanism of Action

    Ionophores lower the energy barrier for transmembrane ion transport, and cause cell death by disrupting the natural gradients of ions like Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+.
