Gram-Positive Activity

Gram positive bacteria cell wall, susceptibility to antibiotics.

Gram-positive bacteria are characterized by a thick, outer peptidoglycan layer that take up crystal violet during the Gram staining process. Peptidoglycan is a unique substance produced by bacteria and key proteins involved in its synthesis are targeted by many types of antibiotics including beta-lactams, cephalosporins, and glycopeptides. Many well known Gram-positive genera include Bacillus, Staphylococcus (includes MRSA), Streptococcus, Clostridium, and Listeria.

The following antibiotics are effective against Gram-positive bacteria.
