Electrophoresis Reagents

Gel electrophoresis and protein separation.

Gel electrophoresis is a method used in molecular biology to separate DNA and proteins through an electrical current based on molecular weight or fragment size. One of the widely used methods to separate proteins is sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis or SDS-PAGE. SDS removes certain protein structures and coats proteins giving them a negative charge allowing them to travel through the polyacrylamide gel towards the positively charged anode. Polyacrlamide gels are a porous material which allows smaller proteins to travel faster and further in a gel than larger proteins. Commonly used SDS-PAGE reagents include acrylamide, bis-acrylamide, SDS, and HEPES.
