Description
Chloramphenicol acetate is a naturally-occurring co-metabolite of chloramphenicol in Streptomyces venezuelae with albeit significantly lower potency. Chloramphenicol acetate is the major product of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, the major resistance mechanism to chloramphenicol.

Chloramphenicol acetate is soluble in ethanol, methanol, DMF and DMSO.

    Mechanism of Action

    After entering a bacterial cell, chloramphenicol binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit preventing peptide bond formation. Resistance to chloramphenicol may be due to decreased cell permeability or a mutation in the 50S ribosomal subunit.
